The Quarter's Biggest Exam
Wall Street ended a volatile week mixed as falling oil prices and another strong earnings season helped offset a sharp selloff in semiconductor stocks.
The S&P 500 finished little changed, while the Nasdaq 100 lost more than 1% as a semiconductor index tumbled 4.3%. Brent crude retreated from $100 a barrel, easing inflation concerns after hopes emerged that diplomatic talks between the U.S. and Iran could resume.

Investors were also encouraged by corporate earnings, with 85% of S&P 500 companies reporting so far beating profit estimates, the highest rate in five years.
Markets now turn their attention to next week's earnings from Microsoft, Meta, Apple, and Amazon, which are expected to test whether massive AI spending is translating into stronger profits.
Peel Take: Lower oil prices gave markets some breathing room, but AI remains the bigger picture. With Big Tech earnings around the corner, investors are looking for evidence that record AI investments are boosting profits, not just driving higher spending.
What's Ripe
Tenet Healthcare Corp. (THC) 17.2%
Tenet soared 17% after the hospital operator crushed Wall Street's second-quarter earnings expectations and sharply raised its full-year profit outlook.
The company now expects earnings of $20.30 to $21.69 per share, up from its previous forecast of $16.38 to $18.68.
Peel Take: A strong earnings beat combined with a major guidance upgrade signals that patient volumes and profitability remain robust, giving investors renewed confidence in the healthcare provider's growth outlook.
Digital Realty Trust Inc. (DLR) 11.0%
DLR surged 11%, making it the best-performing stock in the S&P 500, after the data center REIT reported better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and raised its full-year outlook.
The results underscored continued strong demand for data center capacity driven by AI infrastructure spending.
Peel Take: The AI boom isn't just lifting chipmakers. It continues to fuel demand for the infrastructure behind them. Data center operators like Digital Realty are emerging as some of the biggest beneficiaries of the AI buildout.
What's Rotten
Intel Corp. (INTC) 7.9%
Intel fell 7.9% to $92.32 despite the chipmaker posting better-than-expected second-quarter earnings and revenue, driven by strong demand from the AI boom. Investors appeared to take profits after the stock's strong run, overshadowing the solid results.
Peel Take: In today's AI market, beating expectations isn't always enough. After a strong rally, investors are increasingly demanding stronger guidance and upside catalysts rather than just solid quarterly results.
Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (SPCX) 2.7%
SpaceX fell 2.7% to $115.07 after another Starship launch delay and a new Hold rating from HSBC, which set a $115 price target.
Investors shrugged off plans for another launch attempt on Friday evening as concerns over execution weighed on sentiment.
Peel Take: SpaceX's long-term picture remains tied to Starship, but repeated testing delays are reminding investors that even the most ambitious space programs rarely follow a smooth flight path.
