Market News
A Weaker Job Market Bolsters Fed Cut
U.S. companies shed payrolls in November by the most since early 2023, adding to concerns about a more pronounced weakening in the labor market. Private-sector payrolls decreased by 32,000, according to ADP Research data released Wednesday. Payrolls have now fallen four times in the last six months.
Wednesday’s weak ADP report risks heightening concerns of a more rapid deterioration in the labor market ahead of the Federal Reserve’s final policy meeting of the year next week.
This adds to evidence of a slowdown in the U.S. jobs market, reinforcing bets that the Federal Reserve will cut interest rates at its final policy meeting of 2025, driving stocks higher as bond yields fell alongside the dollar.
The market reacted optimistically, with almost 350 S&P 500 shares rising despite weakness across most megacaps. Nvidia Corp.’s Jensen Huang is unsure whether China would accept its H200 chips should the US relax restrictions. Microsoft Corp. slid 2.5% on a report of lower demand for some artificial-intelligence tools.
