Stocks Struggle as Traders Grew Anxious on Fed’s Outlook 

Global stocks wavered while Treasury yields edged higher again as traders grew anxious about the pace of easing by the Federal Reserve beyond this week’s near-certain interest-rate cut.

The S&P 500 Index shed 0.4% in New York after four straight days of gains. The technology-heavy Nasdaq 100 Index fell 0.3%. Paramount Skydance Corp. launched a hostile takeover bid for Warner Bros. Discovery Inc. at $30 a share in cash on Monday,  just days after the company agreed to a deal with Netflix Inc. 

The Fed is broadly expected to deliver a 25 basis-point rate cut on Wednesday, but some traders have warned that it may signal a slower pace of easing ahead. 

That’s because still-high inflation and the lack of fresh data during the longest US shutdown in history have caused divisions among officials.

Confluent Inc. (CFLT) 29.1%

  • CFLT surged 29% to $29.87 after International Business Machines struck a deal to acquire the data-infrastructure company.

  • IBM will acquire all of Confluent’s issued and outstanding common shares for $31 a share, or an enterprise value of $11 billion. The transaction is expected to close by the middle of 2026.

Warner Bros Discovery Inc (WBD) 4.4%

  • WBD climbed 4.4% after Paramount Skydance launched a hostile bid for the entertainment company. The development came just days after Warner Bros. struck an agreement with Netflix 

What's Rotten

Marvell Technology Inc. (MRVL) 7.0%

  • MRVL fell 7%. Benchmark Research downgraded the stock to Hold from Buy and withdrew its price target, citing a “high degree of conviction” that the company had lost both Amazon’s Trainium 3 and 4 designs to Taiwanese rival Alchip Technologies.

CoreWeave Inc. (CRWV) 2.3%

  • CRWV fell 2.3%. The cloud computing company said it planned to offer $2 billion worth of convertible senior notes due 2031 in a private placement, with an option for initial buyers to purchase up to an additional $300 million.
